Porewater chemistry of Opalinus Clay revisited: Findings from 25 years of data collection at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory

چکیده

The characterisation of porewater chemistry in nanoporous clayrocks is a difficult task. Appropriate extraction methods that have been developed fairly recently and the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory (Switzerland) played pioneer role this regard. During last 25 years high-quality data from Opalinus Clay acquired. Notably, since early synthesis Pearson et al. (2003) considerable number newer borehole waters extracted drillcores generated. In study, borehole, squeezing, leaching cation exchange were critically evaluated order to derive consistent database across formation. results underline composition not constant but exhibits regular change towards formation boundaries. This explained by diffusive between Na–Cl type two bounding freshwater aquifers. Furthermore, constrained exchange, carbonate mineral celestite equilibria. Major solute obtained squeezed are broadly consistent, although latter exhibit somewhat more scatter. Overall, knowledge on porewaters at has significantly improved. particular, regards spatial profiles major elements besides Cl, better constraints exchanger pH/pCO 2 conditions. • A unique compiled. Consistency cores shown. conditions appear remain

Biogeochemical Processes in a Clay Formation In-situ Experiment: Part B – Results from overcoring and evidence of strong buffering by the rock formation

An in-situ Porewater Chemistry (PC) experiment in the Opalinus Clay formation was carried out at the Mont Terri underground rock laboratory (Jura Mountains, Switzerland) for a period of five years. A traced water with a composition close to that expected in the formation was continuously circulated and monitored in a packed-off borehole to achieve diffusive equilibration. An unwanted microbial ...

Preliminary laboratory thermo - hydro - mechanical characterization of Opalinus clay

1 INSTRODUCTION In the concept of geological radioactive waste disposal, argillite is being considered as a possible host rock in various countries such as France and Switzerland. This material is chosen thanks to its extremely low permeability that is required to limit the transfer of radioactive elements from the waste package towards the environment. During the construction and exploitation ...

Rates of microbial hydrogen oxidation and sulfate reduction in Opalinus Clay rock

Hydrogen gas (H2) may be produced by the anoxic corrosion of steel components in underground structures, such as geological repositories for radioactive waste. In such environments, hydrogen was shown to serve as an electron donor for autotrophic bacteria. High gas overpressures are to be avoided in radioactive waste repositories and, thus, microbial consumption of H2 is generally viewed as ben...
